Grenada Football Association (GFA) Super League Football tournament got off the way yesterday afternoon at the Victoria Park in Grenville, despite the inclement weather. President of the association Cheney Joseph, encouraged players to lift the level of their game and warned that if the fans do not see anything super in the standard of play, they may not return thus affecting the success of the first ever semi professional football on the island.
Joseph urged players and officials to respect the laws of the game and to do their best to improve the standard of football on the island. “You are the pioneers of a new direction for football, and you must embrace the opportunity given to be part of history” the GFA boss told the players in front of an appreciative crowd at the Victoria Park.
Governor General and Patron of the GFA, Sir Carlyle Glean, in declaring the tournament open, reminded players they must not be just contented in playing in the first ever semi professional tournament on the island, but urged them the super must be well noted on and off the field of play at all times.
Sir Glean, using his usual lecturing expressions to deliver his message, told the players “you must show the fans and persons coming to these games why this tournament is really super, if you are not lifting the standard of play, then you would have failed” he warned the players assembled for the opening match between the Planters of St. Andrew and the Chiefs of St. Patrick.
The Chiefs came out victors over the Planters two nil in front approximately seven hundred persons who braved the inclement weather. Following the game there were fireworks display and entertainment which brought the curtains down on the evening’s proceedings. |
