GFA Press Release 05-02-2012

The Grenada Football Association has announced its intention to commence its inaugural Semi Professional League (GSL) in March of this year. The association’s Executive Committee following a meeting in April of last year has decided to kick off the inaugural tournament involving six parishes.

The teams participating in the inaugural tournament are St. Andrew’s Planters, St. Patrick’s Chiefs, St. Mark’s Sharks, St. John’s Wizards, St. David’s Lions and St. George’s Stars.

The competition will involve the nation’s best players in each parish from its thirty five affiliates. Some two hundred players have been initially drafted into the pool for consideration on the final roster.

Tournament Director, Patrick Francis who holds the important portfolios of Chairman of Technical Committee, Youth and Women’s football in Grenada, says he is very excited at the prospects of lifting the standard of football on the island.

Francis is hoping that the association’s efforts will provide opportunities for more home grown players to secure international contracts. He said, “We have the talent pound for pound, all we need is to provide a platform and incentives for players to showcase their skills”.

Grenada with only ninety thousand inhabitants has been one of the Caribbean success stories. The island was runner up in the inaugural Shell Caribbean Cup and has been the smallest nation to qualify back to back in the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2008 and 2010.

The GFA is seeking to attract great sponsorship for its inaugural tournament and efforts are ongoing at negotiating sponsorship from the corporate sector.

Grenada has produced some fine players over the years including the likes of Reading’s Jason Roberts, New England Revolution, Sharlrie Joseph, Craig Rocastle of Sporting Kansas FC, Kitson Bain of Carolina Railhawks and Clive Murray of Roi Et FC in Thailand.

Meanwhile, the GFA has confirmed the staging of an international friendly match against Guyana on February 22nd at the Grenada National Football Stadium from 7.00pm.

When last the two teams met, Grenada enjoyed a three one victory over their Caribbean neighbours who have themselves qualified for the third round of the FIFA 2014 World Cup Qualifying Preliminaries.

Grenada is currently ranked 132 while Guyana in ranked forty places higher at 92.
